ECHO Guides and Alumni Celebrate 35 Years

ECHO Guides and AlumniThis past weekend, river guides of all ages converged on the town of Coloma, California to celebrate ECHO’s 35th river season. The 150 people that attended travelled from as far away as New York to attend the reunion.

The celebration included a comprehensive slideshow of ECHO history by co-owner Dick Linford that featured famous trucks, boats, and guides. Young river guides met river veterans from the 70s, 80s, and 90s who shared decades of “wisdom” and tradition.

    All,

Dewi and Lynn spent last night at our house before driving to Salt Lake this morning. It was an impromptu continuation of the party….Pat and I rallied and made a big dinner and the beer and wine flowed and after dinner the stories flowed too. Marky was in rare form. He even told the great Idaho bus& cattle massacre story that had us all howling, including Lars, who was hearing the very unedited versions of the ECHO stories for the first time in his 14 year old life. This morning when I woke up to get ready for work there were bodies in sleeping bags on PACO pads scattered like fall leaves throughout the house. It was a beautiful sight. When I headed out the door at 7:30 to drop Lars off at school and to head to the office, the sleepy headed old/young/new guides were on river time, gathered around the kitchen table sipping coffee, eating left over ECHO party bagels, and still telling stories. Across the ECHO generations, what an incredible collection of people and great friends we have. How lucky we are to have spent that time together, to be spending these days together, as always, having the time of our lives. As Moira says, “Once upon a time when we were feral.”

Thank you Dick, Joe and Sue for always making a “city girl” feel right at home with all you outdoorsmen and women. I can see why Tom always speaks so warmly of his ECHO days- what a wonderful group of people. I had a great time seeing old friends and making new ones. You sure know how to throw a party!
